The legend behind the bear – How Bern got its name
In 1191, Duke Berthold V of Zähringen founded a settlement on a peninsula wrapped by the river Aare. Proud of his fortress, but stuck for a name, he invited nobles from across the region for a feast. After three days of revelry and no breakthrough, someone proposed a bold idea: send a hunting party into the forest and name the town after the first animal they kill.
The first catch—a deer—didn’t impress Berthold. He wanted something fiercer. Hours later, the forest echoed with a roar. The Duke himself charged at a massive bear and struck it down. That was the moment Bern earned its name—and the bear, its eternal symbol.
Today, the bear remains at the heart of the city’s identity. Since 1513, Bern has even housed real bears in its famous “Bärengraben,” or bear moat. Visitors from all over come to see them, connecting past and present in one unforgettable city landmark.
