The legend of Monte San Salvatore – The blessed peak above Lugano
High above Lugano’s sparkling lake sits Monte San Salvatore, affectionately called the “Sugarloaf of Switzerland.” Its peak offers sweeping views across the Alps, but its name and sacred significance come from a legend passed down for centuries. It’s said that during Christ’s final ascent to heaven, He paused atop this mountain to bless the people and bring peace to the region. Since the 12th century, a small chapel has stood on its summit, turning the mountain into a revered pilgrimage site.
Devotees once climbed steep forest paths from the lakeside village of Paradiso to reach the chapel, especially on Ascension Day, when the faithful gathered to honor San Salvatore in a procession still held to this day. Thankfully, since 1890, a funicular has eased the journey, but the views and spiritual energy remain just as moving.
