Long before climbers and cameras turned the Matterhorn into a global icon, a curious giant shaped it with a single misstep.
Gargantua was no ordinary creature—he towered above the Alps, his head brushing the clouds and his hands big enough to uproot trees. Though massive and clumsy, he was gentle and full of wonder. From his home in Italy’s Valtournenche, he often looked north, curious about what lay beyond the unbroken alpine ridge.
One day, driven by that curiosity, Gargantua climbed up and stepped over the ridge. But as he brought his foot down on the icy slope near what is now Zermatt, he slipped. His enormous body crashed through the mountain range, leaving behind a trail of destruction. All that remained standing between his legs was a single sharp peak—the Matterhorn.
To this day, it stands as a reminder of that curious stumble—a monument to legend, strength, and the unpredictable power of nature.
