The legend behind the magnet: The prisoner of Château Chillon
Nestled on the shores of Lake Geneva, Château Chillon has stood as a silent witness to centuries of power struggles. But its most gripping tale lies underground – in a cold, dark dungeon carved into the rock.
Here, in 1530, François Bonivard was chained to a pillar for defying the Duke of Savoy. A scholar, a reformer, and a patriot, Bonivard paced in circles for six long years, carving a path in the stone floor. When the Bernese finally liberated the castle in 1536, they found him alive – and still fighting in spirit.
This moment of defiance and freedom would later inspire Lord Byron, who immortalized Bonivard in his poem “The Prisoner of Chillon” and etched his own name into the dungeon’s column – a mark that remains to this day.
