Above the peaceful town of Interlaken, nestled between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, rises the forested Harder mountain. From most angles, its slopes are blanketed in green. But facing the town, one rock face remains exposed—etched with the face of a man. Locals know this face as the Hardermannli, a tragic and sinister figure from the 16th century.
As the story goes, a cruel and power-hungry provost named Leonardus was sent to govern Interlaken’s once-benevolent monastery. His harsh rule earned him the nickname “Harder.” One day, his obsession with a kind and devout girl named Martha led to a fateful pursuit through the forest. Fleeing his advances, Martha reached a cliff’s edge—and rather than surrender, she leaped. The heavens, witnessing her unjust fate, turned Leonardus to stone, condemning him for eternity. His face remains on the mountain as a chilling reminder that kindness should always triumph.
